A Guided-to-Independent Approach to STEM-based Learning

These dynamic resources provide guided lessons to integrate project-based learning into your science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum. Each unit provides background information for teachers and students and moves from teacher-directed activities toward more open-ended activities. The culminating activity in each unit allows students to design their own unique "invention" or conduct an experiment of their own creation. Students will be challenged to work collaboratively, using a design process that helps them "step into STEM" with greater competence and confidence.

Today’s students need to be adept at such 21st-century skills as collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, digital literacy, and implementing the engineering design process. The dynamic resources found in Stepping Into STEM provide guided lessons to teach these skills and integrate project-based learning into your science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum. The lessons are organized into 7 units:

Unit 3: Static Electricity
Unit 4: Structures
Unit 5: Kitchen Chemistry
Unit 6: Flying Saucers
Unit 7: Derby Cars
Each unit includes a guided activity, 2–3 paired activities, and one final challenge activity. Activities meet Next Generation Science Standards and incorporate Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) and Crosscutting Concepts (CCC). This resource is 160 pages in all.
